vs. Kicker
This was a subject I stumbled across on Aikiweb. I even found a vidoe of another style's answers. this is a subject we don't often address directly, because one-legged ukemi is kinda tough. I thought I might start a disscussion on the subject.

What would you do if attacked by a kicker? How would you like to train for this situation? Are there any kicks you think would pose a difficulty for an Aikido player?

I like the geis solution --the kicker always must shift his weight to his support leg to kick --if you practice a little you can learn to see the effect-- when he shifts to kick his nose will get in line with his support knee and give you a good targeting mechinism to step into his support knee with a large step which always takes you inside his kick's effective range-- it is a nice practice to do with a partner you jsut watch his nose move and just lightly touch his knee with your step as he shifts to kick -- in full appplication you step goes through his knee on its path to the floor-- very bad for kicker

this method works well and is maximumlly efficent in that you are using a very natural body action that you do unconsciously all the time to counter a very unnatural highly conscious athletic body action-- kinda like comparing shomente to a punch -- not a fair fight at all

I guess this thread was started a while ago, but I've just recently started combing through all the videos of an Ueshiba style aikido-ka named Gary Boaz out of Kansas (you can find his channel on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/kyushoaikiguy. He has some videos on YouTube, however, that are offered strictly through Expert Village, some of which deal with aikido responses to kicks. Some I liked, so are... mmm, I dunno. I'll post one or two I like and you can check out the others, if you're interested.

Spinning back kick

He does basically aiki nage (they call it irimi nage) and a kind of chin grab, but I can also see doing ushiro ate, maybe.

Then choking the dude 😄

Catching the kick and leg locking it (this one was in Chris's video, too)

the whole rest of the aikido universe outside of the kg purview calls it irimi-nage (its even given that name in all the koryu kata -- aikinage is what the rest of the world calls dissapering target (#10 of big ten --shizumi otoshi)

my theory is that the names got confused somewhere way back and it never got fixed -- personally i'm gonna start calling the #5 of the big ten iriminage too -- its just less confusing

-- nice knee catch in the last one
