I have been having an on going discussion about Aiki ashi waza on my blog. I am all for it!

Anyhow I have read a second hand Tomiki quote several times, but have lost track of the source...Tomiki was quoted saying something like "if you think your aikido is good introduce it to my ashi waza"

Anyone seen that source lately? Jeff Duncan says he thinks it is an Obha quoting Tomiki, but I can't find it.

I had heard that Tomiki sensei was doing aikido randori and his partner gave him trouble, so he popped him with a foot sweep, and when the fellow protested, "What was that?!" Mr. Tomiki replied, "Research."

I've often wondered why deashi-barai or even okuriashi-barai isn't used in hand randori.... It's all over the place.

Maybe that's why?

Since you're doing hand randori to work on the hand-to-hand mechanics, motor-coordination subconscious sequencing and cerebullar memory ... maybe having the extra, interesting little twist to have to consider your feet placement in THAT way makes the difficulty factor a bit too high for regular practice? Meaning, too damn hard?

I've done it in practice, as "research," too (LOL!), and even when both partners have the green light from the beginning, it's really hard to NOT step right into a foot sweep while doing hand randori for hand randori's normal practice purpose.
