Jo attacks in San Kata
I was watching the jo techniques of the san kata, and I wanted to bring up a topic to continue to polish the kata. Even though I pretend not to be a kata guy, I am really a stickler when it comes to the details of kata.

The Fugakukai adopted a double attack ( striking twice) for some reason while doing the jo strikes in the san kata. I think this looks silly, contrived and lacks 'juice'.

The jo might be thought of a a bayonet, or a spear. I suggest running up and stabbing the guy with intention. It is a real attack.

Here is the English guys showing it. This I like!

Yeah, I was always curious about the difference, too. I've always assumed the double (or sometimes triple!) thrusting ideas came from a jodo influence somewhere back in the day in the Fugakukai (maybe something akin to kaeshi zuki?), but you're right, I believe the rest of the aikido world treats the "jo" attack as more of a "yari" or spear. I'd be interested to hear how that came about...

I agree the double thrust looks silly.. if you just do it once it doesn't have that huge set-up feeling....

I disagree with running in to attack anyone that is just standing there.. Moving in you can be more precise than a big ole bum rush, but again not the silly thrusting as you go crud either.

I disagree with what I perceive as the use of only his arms as the delivery of energy. He may be using his center its hard to know without feeling it. From the outside it looks as though he is only using his arms, and has limited his attacks to only being able to do a thrust..
The drawing action I was taught (don't know if it is the same, but I have seen Waddell do it a few times as well) allows you to thrust, strike from above, or under and the only limiter is what side of your body you drew the stick back on..
