Video Exchange - Shime Waza in Aikido
Some of the other forums I inhabit, such as juggling and magic sites, often have a video contest - or at least a video exchange of ideas. Basically your dojo films a short segment about whatever the theme is about. You submit it and get feedback from dojos all over the country. Neat huh?

I was talking with Nick last week about how to foster a flow of information between dojos. I was thinking this might be a good way to do it. I think as a budding organization finding a way to play with each other throughout the year might be invaluable and this here interweb thingy might have to be our medium.

I am going to start this off and see if it gains traction

Theme for February....Aiki Shime Waza !!!

Can you get off that choke in randori? Got some ideas for an incomplete shime kata you have been working on? Want some constructive criticism why your technique isn't working?

Post a link here sometime this month!

Oh, I like this. Shime-waza is one of my favorite things in Judo. I might have to see what I can come up with too.

I have already brainstormed a few things since yesterday.

It is an interesting challenge.

You need Sam Tipton in on this. He loves to slip in and suddenly you are in standing newaza.

Interesting that idea of 'standing ne waza'. I have been thinking like that in my own work lately in order to expend the amount and types of techniques I fit into. On the opposite end of the spectrum I have been trying to find aiki randori on the ground.

We have two videos that we shot yesterday. I'll have them online here once Nick is finished with the editing. If this becomes a recurring deal, which it easily could, I'll split the topic into its own forum for warehousing.

Looks good guys. You guys went in totally different directions than the ideas I had.

We plan on jamming on the idea tonight with the camera. We shall see what we come up with.

Dang it! my new HD camera...I can't edit it with the software I have been using. I now have lovely footage that I can't do anything with.

I shot some cool material though. Prepare yourself to be stunned by pure awesomeness! ........ Eventually.

I encountered a similar problem when Nick bought the camera we're using. The work-around was to use the software that came with the camera to dump the camera to the PC. I could then open each video, one at a time, and export (or maybe File -> Save As & select a different format) so I could edit it. Potentially time consuming, but potentially a work-around as well.

I found a few new things I don't think we taped that live in irimi-nage & ushiro-kubi-gatame. Cameron also tossed one in as well. I'm hoping I can grab one of the guys before class and get them on film & uploaded this upcoming week.

Many of us have a background in Tomiki Aikido. I'm wondering, what sort of background other folks on the forum have, and if their system of Aikido (or any other martial art for that matter) might have to offer in this arena.

I am still working on this. I got 9 chokes in during randori the other night. Some of my original ideas did not pan out.

Well, February has come and gone. In the Aikido classes I led, I tried to expose people to various choking ideas from different entries. As a judoka with a penchant for a good strangle, I had a blast. I received some positive feedback from folks over the different series we worked on. I'll try to get the stuff I worked up filmed Tuesday. Schedules just haven't quite lined up over the past week or so to get it on film.

What did everyone else find? How easy was it for you to adapt to choking? Did you notice openings from various positions, or did you find yourself getting into the same position for the choke regularly? Please share!

Though I issued the challenge, I learned that my standing shime kind of sucked. A noble idea in training that I still don't have the knack for. I still plan on getting a video out, but I have to start landing these ideas in randori before I validate them.

It got me thinking though, are we to preoccupied with throws in aikido?

I think everyone is preoccupied with the idea of throwing, whether it be in Judo or Aikido. And it stays this way for a great many years.

It takes a significant amount of time (and ukemi) to learn that really it's about breaking balance (kuzushi) and fitting/preparing your partner's body to receive a technique (tsukuri). The actual throw (kake) is a simple byproduct, just as 1+2=3. If you add one and two together, you will arrive at three. We see 3, we've felt 3, we want to do 3. But really, we need to do 1 & 2.

yep.. Ive been really looking at this for the last couple of years... if you get 1 & 2 right you can get 3 in effortlessly in an infinite amount of ways... ex: if you get their balance and get the set up right you can throw a particular technique from just about any position and with any grip...

I like the 1+2=3 concept. Good way to put it. I might also add that, at least in my experience, when we get too focused on gake, the throw, we're very rarely ready to flow to the next technique if/when it doesn't work.
