Head being crushed during grappling
Sometimes if I am on bottom of a hold like Kami Shiho or Reverse Kesa Gatame, my head gets crushed pretty hard. In particular with Reverse Kesa sometimes it feels like my jaw wants to dislocate, and it may even be sore the next day.

What I want to know is this: can I just ignore the pain and work on escaping, or is there a risk of some type of head injury and it is time to pat? Has anybody ever heard of a jaw dislocating from a hold down? Also, if I spend a few minutes on the bottom of this hold every class will the pain stop being as severe (like maybe the nervous system becomes more familiar with the situation and doesn't freak out)?

I guess you have about 3 choices...

1) tap
2) take a few ibuprofen before randori so you can better ignore the pain
3) anyone who mashes you that hard in randori - kick their butt so bad they don't do it again!

😛 just kidding 😉 don't do any of that except tap.

maybe a productive course of action would be to tell them they are hurting you and that you can't figure out how to escape without getting hurt and that their behavior is not consistent with the mutual benefit ideal of judo.

I wouldn't want to try to toughen myself up to that sort of abuse by spending progressively more time underneath someone because, yes, you can be injured in that position.

I know exactly what you're talking about Karl. I can make your head a little uncomfortable with kami-shiho-gatame, but I can make your life downright miserable in ushiro-kesa-gatame. I'm one of them head smashin' fellas.

My best advice is to start the escape earlier. There are times where we want our partner to fully secure the hold, then we work on escaping from a worst-case scenario. But, in actual randori, don't let your partner set the hold down. Start your escape before it becomes a full on hold-down, and you'll find you won't be crushed as badly.
