Somebody's gonna be getting a new soccer ball....
I like the stuff starting around the 2:34 mark to the end too.

Very interesting. Which brings up a question, if anyone would care to offer their 2 cents... 😄

How important or necessary is training like this? Can you ever hope to be an effective grappler without it? Or does that last question depend on whether you're hoping to be competitive or more of a dojo-only "technician" or someone who only wants to learn to defend themselves? Just some thoughts. Discuss (if you want)...

I don't know that it's "necessary," but it's certainly a good idea if you want to compete. I still do some of these (the hoppy push up things, for example), and they're just plain good exercise, if nothing else.

If you're only interested in technique, then clearly one's ability to bounce around a soccer ball is kinda irrelevant. But, much like our sweep to control drills are only drills, so are these.

Damon is a man with a plan, you see.

I don't know that it's important or necessary per say. Is it a fun and different way to exercise that helps break up the monotony of your normal workouts? Yes.

Of course you can be an effective grappler without doing these things.

Can you be an effective grappler against someone who does do these things if you don't? I don't know. It's a hypothetical. Odds are, even if you can be effective, it would be a tougher go for you.

If you take two people of the same skill and technical ability, one is in bad physical shape the other is in good physical shape, I put my money on the guy in better physical shape.

What about two guys not at the same skill level but one in good shape and enough skill he can gas the other guy out and bring the more skilled less in shape guy down to his level? Effective strategy? Probably.

Dojo only "technician", someone who only wants to learn to defend themselves is still going to benefit by by some sort of physical activity. Does it have to be this extreme or radical? Probably not. But what happens when you run into one of these MMA cat's who are in uber shape, good enough shape they can out gas the dojo only "technician"?

In a self defense only situation, would you rather have to defend yourself against a couch potato blob or college athlete?

To me, this type of training is a fun, different way to exercise. Doesn't mean I plan on entering any competitions. Just means that if I ever do have to defend myself, I want to give myself every advantage I can. I'm not naive enough to think I'm going to be the most skilled or most in shape guy out there, but the more I can do to level the playing field the better my odds are.

Plus, the chicks dig it. 😉 Which is more important than anything mentioned above.

Not that I'm any kind of fitness aficionado, but I'm intrigued by what seems like a current movement away form lifting dead weights to using this sort of exercise, using gravity, etc (it probably has a name, but I forget what it is). I actually really like the idea of it. I just can't seem to fit any of it into my schedule! 🙁

I'm leaning more towards plyometrics and interval training these days. I want endurance, endurance, endurance. I want strength and power too, but not as much as I want endurance.

Sure you can. Look into the Wii Fit Board. They have some good Yoga and other type exercise games. Play a game for 30 minutes a night 3x a week instead of watching a tv show for 30 minutes. 😉

Here's a link to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.
