Moose's bar napkin judo
Standing

Build from the ground up!

1. Walk on the balls of your feet to prevent knee injuries and to give you athletic time to react to a backwards throw. This was your toes should not pop up and give it away that you are begging for him to throw you backwards.
2. Be sure that your body is over your foot before it hits the mat or else you will be posing for a picture in a martial arts magazine. Since posing for a picture was not your goal you would be wasting your time and mine.
3. Be sure when you land on the ball of your foot with your body over it that you land for the three feet in a line position, which will set up the proper structure for the full point throw which is awarded with the throw ending with one square inch largely upon the back with force and control.
4. Supporting foot in the direction of the throw! It seems like a simple matter but it is so complicated that a phys ed professor can write a book on it and all professional atheletes adhere to it so why don't we or just players take it a little more seriously. By placing the foot in the direction of the throw it causes your body to not only want to turn in the proper direction, but causes it to get there with the most power and efficiency.

Grappling

1. Two hands in one spot
2. Shrimp walking
3. Bridge & roll & escape from all basic hold downs
4. Work on basic pins
5. Work on basic arm locks, remember to lock your lapel
6. Work on basic chokes
7. Work on basic series & combinations
8. Work on escape from between the legs series before doing #4 through #7, watch out for arms extended or too far apart.
9. Think about what you are going so that you can apply techniques properly.
10. For questions call someone who knows more than you do!

I should print this out and tape it to my gym bag or something. If I could remember to work on just these points each class, I bet I'd improve a lot.

Moose is one of the most profound Judo players I've ever met. This is just another example of why. Thanks for transcribing this Brian!

So, what is this "escape from between the legs series"?

I know a bunch of material from between the legs... but I havent seen it in the form of a series like the envelope or the meatgrinder...

it was not not a real series like meat grinder but rather a set basic methods of going through the leg defense-- A) breaking the lock working around the leg and step over, B) brush over slip and/or stacking, C) spring back and collapse his knees underhook then headfirst pivot D) leg out pop up to choke then stack or slip ( this last was probably added by Caldwell)

I believe Tom was one of Carls judo guys way back when. He might have been an assistant Olimpic coach in 84 & 88. Posably worked with Carl while in law school in Texas. I visited his club in St.Petersburg Fl. once or twice in maybe the mid 90's. I was fancing myself as a fair newasa man at the time. He rolled me up one handed like a movie cowboy rolling a cigarette. My understanding was he joined a law firm out of state.

Man Isure miss yall probably a lot more than yall miss me. The words are very kind and i have a lot of good things to say about yall too! I thank the lord for giving me a body to endure the many years of judo. I really show my love for Karl Geis who spent time with me that I was not worthy of. A Great Sensei and and friend who i love like a dad. He used to say that Gene LeBell was the badest man on the plannet. I had the privelige of talking to Mr. Lebelle when Karl Got him on the phone, and Mr. LeBelle said Karl was the Badest man on the plannet. I guess it's like the way I look up to Bob Rea, Dr. Berliner, Dr. Bregman, Dr. Wooley, Chuck Caldwell, Cliff Noreguard, Al Holtman ect. The list of the badest people seems to grow more with each passing day. I know that I have missed a lot of people and I assure you not because of any pecking order. I look at it this way, if we can still go out and be a good uke no matter what rank, we are for sure a lot tuffer than the guy or gal that sets on the couch for to many years doing nothing. When there are people out there taking in your every word, action, and yes the ramblings of a guy on a bar napkin. judo will be secure in my heart until the lord takes me home. I love yall and hope to see yall someday agin soon. Oh yea I didn't want to leave out Greg, Nick, and Kyle too!

I wouldn't trade that old bar napkin for most of the judo books in my dojo library brother ...I'm still cutting up mangos the way you taught me too!
