ryotedori owaza
Here are some notes I used for a recent clinic on owaza jupon - except we used 2-hand attacks instead of having the guy rushing at tori.

Ryotedori Owaza Jupon

Owaza was originally intended to add some dynamic motion to the practice of folks who were practicing in a linear, static fashion. It was also intended to illustrate techniques important for when tori does not have time to deal with uke.

The way we've always done Owaza with uke almost running at tori makes for good exercise and illustrates some interesting timing changes when dealing with a fast uke – but it is punishing on uke and unsuitable for older aikidoka or lesser-matspaces. This two-handed Owaza has evolved over the last few years to replace the running zombie owaza as our favorite practice mode. I still advise getting some practice doing the big throws with a fast uke into a crashpad, but for everyday practice, I find this Owaza much superior

You will recognize several ideas from Ichikata/Gokata in this Owaza.

All attacks are uke stepping into ma-ai with right foot to grab both of tori's wrists.

#1 Tenchinage
fade back and to the side, creating a void feeling, both hands raised in the center, then turn with uke so that he is moving back and you are moving forward.
#2 Otoshi
step back as in the previous technique, left hand raised in the center and right hand cupping uke's left forearm and raised like a platter. Catch a far footfall and extend uke into otoshi.
#3 ude guruma
step back as in previous techniques. When the previous otoshi fails, hook uke's upper arm and turn butt-first into uke's rear leg. Uke forward roll or turn and backfall.
#4 tekubi guruma
same as previous, but contact point is at uke's forearm, forcing tori to walk a slightly different path into uke's leg.
#5 iriminage
same as previous technique, but when guruma fails, complete guruma with a release #2/4 motion “golf swing.” hook uke behind the head and walk butt-first behind him. When he stands up (on a far foot swing), iriminage.
#6 shihonage
same as previous, but when guruma fails, golf swing directly into shihonage
#7 ushiroate
same as previous, but when guruma fails, golf swing directly into ushiroate
#8 kotegaeshi
same as previous, but when guruma fails, golf swing directly into kotegaeshi. Alternately, you can under-hook uke's hand and get the evil reverse kotegaeshi from Gokata.
#9 ushiro kubigatame
same as iriminage, but as uke stands up, set the neck hold. Alternately you can set hadakajime as in kimenokata.
#10 shizumiotoshi
step back as in all previous techniques. When your magic fails you, drop and hide beside uke's leg until he is passed then stand up to run.
