Any gripping thoughts or commentary?

How would our system deal with a guy fighting to dominate grips and such?

IMHO with regard to grips we go back to Usejima's lesson ---live in the gutter -- work form the wost places then all the worst places dont scare you and you can prevail from the gutter then you have no need to waste energy--
KG spent years practicing from the weakest grips
grip fights are a waste of energy-- they yield relatively small pay off in advantage for large expenditure of work and distraction -- technical judo concentrates on feet and center of gravity and the hands mostly take care of themselves

Very cool.
What would be an example of a bad grip to practice from?

In the tournaments I've participated in, most guys like to fight for grips. It tends to throw their game off quite a bit when you get a small piece of a grip, then methodically use that to improve you grip. Sort of like inchworming up a sleeve or lapel.

I think the weakest grip you can work with is double sleeve grip, like in sode-tsurikomi-goshi as we teach it to beginners. The lapel grip is the more powerful of the two grips we have.

I understand.
But the double sleeve grip we use seems weak for both parties. If you wanted to really train in the worst position, would you give your partner two lapel grips and you take his sleeves?

Would a side benefit be that it makes your game more ambidexterous?

I think you'll find good success with that arrangement Chris. You can also play the elbows instead of the ends of the sleeves, just not as weak a position.

I'm not sure if this sort of play will help you become more ambidexterous or not. Osawa's hand-weaving material is probably the best thing for developing throws on both sides as your hands float around and you throw on the move.
