In evoking a change in a person's mass from static state to dynamic there is a small shift, typically a quarter inch or less, that gets the target's center of gravity into motion that one teacher of mine called "breaking the moment of inertia"...that small change can result from various stimuli including a breath (in or out) directed back and down... as Howard and Joe so aptly demonstrate ....once that center of gravity ticks over into motion just slightly, it is susceptible to angular change in surprising and counter intuitive paths including vaulting, rotation, and sinking.... The use of this tactic is one cause of the inexorable feeling that good kuzushi exhibits...
