Kesa Gatame Variation
I stumbled across an instructional vidoe on the net that had a variation on kesa I haven't seen used at our school. You set up like normal, but use the far hand (the one that usually goes arouns his head) to get a collar grip and drive your elbow down into their solar plexus. Your forearm will press down into his chest.

Please experiment and give me your thoughts.

Chris,

Let's assume I am holding uke on his right side. My right arm usually controls his head. Is my right arm on the right side of uke's head (where my body is), or is it on the left side? There's a nice one-handed choke that can be employed if my arm is set from uke's right side, similar to the one which can be found during an escape from tate shiho gatame, or the variant of okuri eri jime I use standing up when uke ducks under a collar grip.

... and this leads directly to an armbar for uke when he escapes, as I discovered with Danny last night.

The right hand being secured on the left side of uke's collar seems to be a better bet. That being said, the temptation I found was to apply a little muscle-based leverage by lifting upward with the hand and downward with the elbow. This too can be exploited by a skilled uke, being that now I'm exerting energy downward.

I felt both forms did not afford me as much control as traditional kesa gatame.

Overall, if you're in the mood to torture someone a bit this hold-down could be a little useful, provided they aren't a skilled player. Just my opinion.
