Kuri-Hanashi: Whip it isn't good
We've been exploring trap blocks lately. One of the things we've noticed are differences between solo kihon practice and partnered kihon practice.

Kuri-Hanashi is a technique I performed incorrectly for a long time when I compare the two different forms.

The attached video shows the technique performed twice. The first is incorrect. Note how the tip of the jo swings backward in a loop before going forward. If a swordsman were attacking, I'd be dead.

The second repetition is correct. All three trap blocks begin with tori entering and pushing straight up to take uke's balance. From here, the throwing action is forward. The "whipping" action is absent.

We have a saying about Jyodo at Windsong: If it feels sexy, it's probably wrong. 😉
