Sounds like a good idea to me. Something I've wondered about... Only thing is, I'm not sure how one goes about nage waza without sleeves or a strong collar to grip?

T-shirts are amazingly sturdy. You'll be surprised how much tugging can go on without the shirt ripping.

The nasty answer involves gripping places that hurt. Instead of a lapel grip, I like gripping in the armpit, or for slightly less nasty a cupped palm under the arm in the shoulder blade. You could grab an ear as well 😉

Mr. Milk of Human Kindness has good points, although there are some less cruel methods. At my Duncan gig, while it lasted, the Judo classes were don no-gi - most of the people walking into the class didn't have a gi. Wrestling-style tie-ups (collar and elbow, over-underand ect.) are all more then adequate for setting up and executing Judo throws. The only issues I found were the difficulty adapting tie-ups to height differences and compensating for the fact that the tie-ups compress the space a lot more than gi grips.

It might also be fun to try out Judo with an old coat or jacket in addition to T-Shirts. Maybe even wearing gloves? Actually it might be cool to do a little aikido with gloves every once and a while to help foolks learn how to defend themselves during the winter.

Which one? The one past its expiration date, or the one left out on the counter too long? 😂

The one from Mad Canadian Cows.

T-shirt Judo is a good idea. I have don this on several occassions. You can cup the back of the neck with a palm as the same with the cup hand on the back of the elbow. When turning some one over from turtle position you can hook the inside of the elbow with the inside of your hand and wrist area and clasp your other hand. It's the outside of the thumb where the base of the thumb and wrist meet. when you flex it, it makes a u shaped area for hooking. I have some videos of Vince demonstrating throwing using the t-shirt and also doing some neat chokes from being on the bottom in kami shio gatame.

Yyyyep. Gotta use the "sloth" hand as Nick (or was it Chuck?) used to call it. Cupping the hand, fingers and thumb together does quite a bit for control when entering the through (neck, elbow, under the shoulder slightly behind the armpit). Of course, if you can't hang on the uke, then the landing might be a little more exciting 😄 I've watched quite a bit of video of JJ guys grappling with no gi and they quite good use of "sloth" hands, too.

I kept meaning to try and do this in some of the noon classes and then I couldn't make the noon class anymore! We'll have to try it in the morning sometime.

This is a really cool idea. I vote we schedule a week/weekend, lest this says just an idea that we never get around to working with. 😄

Okay, well, just for Chris we'll do t-shirt judo.

T-shirt ONLY judo.

No pants.

(Duck tape okay).

in my oppinion a little no gi questions and answere session is good. It is not good to wait until the real deal to find out that you could be lost with out a gi. I have found that good long hard years of fun practice tends to enlighten a judoka on all of the soft spots on the body and how to attack it so hard when presented to you that no gi practice was not necessary. i also found that classic kata answered the rest of my questions. I only speak as an old judoka who is currently on the Phelps county sheriffs department CERT team.
