There are times where I have picked up various objects like a jo, but of differing weights & lengths, and I've naturally found the balance point automatically. I was working scheduled maintenance one night and had about 10 minutes before I could actually start (maintenance cannot start before 11PM). There was a piece of metal conduit electricians use. It was much smaller diameter and several inches shorter than a jo. Just for fun I ran through all the kihons a few times, and then all of the katas. I found I adjusted naturally to the new object.

Has anyone else improvised with an object of different size, diameter or weight? What were your experiences?

A lot of the tanjo (walking stick) and for that matter kenjutsu techniques are pretty much applied jo kihon using other weapons. Jutte too, but I have never done those.
