jyodo considerations
Kyles question on spatial conditions in kihons brought out some fruitful ideas which i wanted to note:
1. the way space is maintained, lost , and regained
2. makiotoshi being the breakover point
3 a makiotoshi varient ala aiuchi from san kata sword on sword--emphaises the drop
4 a maikiotoshi varient stepping back (similar to later partof #12 action large back sweep on the back step ) that empahisizes rise
5 the spatial familaiarty of makitotoshi- the trapblocks, tsukihazushi and dobari all making initial cotact in very similar spatial conditions also
comapring those that cotact the blade surface and those that contact hand/handle.wrist surfaces
6 the further similaity tsukihazushi and dobarai
7 the parity of honteuchi and taihazushi on opposite ends of the spectrum
8 two forms of hiki otoshi as clearing or as intercepting
9 two forms of dobari-advancing/ retreating
10 tsukihazushi advancing is raiuchi
11 trap block varients-- to the face-- across the grip-- reversal etc
12 empty hand corralaries in aikido

Tachiotoshi is a good example of exploring ma (space/distance/timing) in jodo. At the start, shidachi gives pause to uchidachi by matching weapons, establishing his distance. This is a standoff, so shidachi moves just slightly off-line and exercises his longer range. Uchi blocks, and then is so close he must cut with a back step, establishing HIS range. Shi covers and blocks, stepping into the low trap. This is too close again, so shi spins to thrust, forcing uchi to retreat right into the sweet spot for the haymaker. Hikiotoshi is authoritative, ending uchi's aggressive mindset and convincing him this would be a good day to stay home and consider his life. So this kata introduces proper distance, and teaches both sides how to make distance from a close position. As in aikido, too much distance is just the start of a new fight.
