Hazumi and Ikioi
So you have hazumi, which is "power of the momentum of the whole body" and ikioi, which is "impetus of physical strength."

But I was curious about something. You know the little trick of giving a quick, on/off tug either when uke's foot is in mid-air to extend that step, or just after uke's foot touches to extend the recovery step? On one hand, it's kind of a quick, wrist-only little action, which doesn't require a lot of "strength" or muscle in my mind, but on the other hand, it's definitely a movement that's independent of my body or center. But it still falls under ikioi, right?

This probably falls under the category "if you have to ask...you can't afford it." Think about it....

No sir! No beating me up....it's that April Fool's thing...or something! 😲

It's an interesting question. I suppose one could look at it both ways.

Since my body is moving I can't really generate much "power" by strength, otherwise my feet would anchor to deliver energy. For example, let's take advancing double foot sweep. While it is a small wrist action that does a push then a pull then disappears, the body is moving at the same time.

If it's energy delivered while you're moving, your center is linked to uke's via your grip. So, I'd say ikioi. Just my $0.02.

components of both ikioi and hazumi are going on in tandem in both these examples-- sometimes hazumi sets stuff up then ikioi knocks it off--sometimes just the opposite -- this kind of complimentary action is more common in judo --in aikido its almost all hazumi, all the time -- in judo, its best to start with almost all hazumi and them add ikioi to the mix once the broad strokes are in place
