Lesson 4

This, that, and that over there.

New words

Kore - this
Sore - that
Are - That over there.

Kono (noun) - this (noun)
Sono (noun) - that (noun)
Ano (noun) - that (noun) over there.

Kore, sore, and are are used all of the time.

Let's take a look at some example.

Kore ha okii desu. - This is big.
Kono kuruma ha okii desu. - This car is big.


Q: Sono dojo ha atarashii desu ka? - Is that dojo new?
A: Iie, sore ha furuii desu. - No, that's old.

Q: Are ha yasuii desu ka? - Is that thing over there cheap? //pointing to a car.
A: Iie, ano kuruma ha takaii desu. - No, that car over there is expensive.

Practice:
Ask each other questions and answer using kore, sore, and are

Ano seto ha kashioki desu ka?

Is that student over there smart?... I think.

Are these examples correct John?

Anata no namae Kyle desu.
My name is Kyle.

Watashi ha wakaii desu.
I am young.

Watashi ha seto desu kore dojo.
I am a student at this dojo.

Ano seto ha kashikoi desu ka? - Is that student over there smart?

Perfect, now, How would you answer that?

Kyle,

Your first sentence, anata no namae kyle desu. Would actually be saying
"Your name is Kyle."
If you wanted to say "My name is Kyle" you would have to say "Watashi no namae ha Kyle desu."
good job though.


2nd sentence, perfect.

Watashi ha wakaii desu. - I am young.

3rd sentence.
good job again, just a few tweeks.
the first is that you would say kono dojo instead of kore dojo. you'd use kore if you didn't have a noun after it.
good work though, the 2nd thing is
sometimes Japanese order is just a little weird. good idea though, and in all honesty people would probably still understand you. but here's the order.

watashi ha kono dojo de seto desu.

Literally,

I ha this dojo at student am.

Crazy I know, but that's how you'd say "I am a student at this dojo."

Sore seto ha baka desu. - That student is stupid.

Everything looks good. Except one thing in the second sentence.

Sore seto ha

would need to be

Sono seto ha.

Although Sore and Sono both mean "That" in English. You use Sore if you're just using "That" by itself. You use Sono if you are using "That" in front of a noun.

Examples.

Sore ha okii desu. - That is big.

Sono kuruma ha okii desu. - That car is big.

See how it changed.

So you'd need to make your second sentence.
Sono seto ha baka desu. - That student is stupid.
