Very cool... I like the use of the jo and the belt to demonstrate the principle in different ways....

No hands, only center. Smooth...

Okay, I was up all night thinking about this. It got me all giddy inside. 😄

Sooooo, this morning, in judo we played with these the whole hour, with some pretty nice results. First we did each technique the way Sensei Strange did 'em (all the guys in the judo class were aikido guys as well, so it was a nice crossover practice). No hands, all center. Break balance to one corner, throw to another on recovery. This is what we got...

1) Sumi otoshi tends to lend itself to, well, sumi otoshi but with judo grips. But since everybody wants to do te waza with their hands (and kills it), doing this SS drill really reinforced the idea of not only moving with our center, but all of these reinforced the idea of waiting for uke's recovery step and then taking our step a hair after uke. A pretty sweet ko soto gari also lived there.

2) Hiki otoshi lent itself to a nice uki otoshi once we got judo grips. Again, waiting on the exaggerated recovery step, dropping just a tick after uke's foot touches.

3) Mae otoshi lent itself to a couple of things. The sort of shearing action SS got with mae otoshi, sending uke off his own pinky toe, tended to lend itself to a lovely tai otoshi once judo grips got involved, almost effortless. Then, if uke spun around a little for whatever reason, we ended up with o soto gari (kind of like the o soto Chuck used to have us do when uke is holding his right foot back, trying to keep it from us, and we "step away from what we want" by going to uke's left, forcing him to step with his right, then huzzah! O soto...)

Good stuff. These are really lovely drills both for aikido and judo.
In the end, all I gotta say is, I love this stuff! 😄

Almost forgot... The mae otoshi entry, with judo grips, opens you up for a nice ippon seoi nage, too.

That was probably the best demonstrations of Uki Waza I have ever seen. It's amazing that you took Nick's simple
lesson and turned it into three lessons presented in a slick video format.
It's all about centers. Wonderful.
