An addendum to the basic footsweep drill
I had the evening Judo guys start experimenting with adding tsubame-gaeshi (swallow flight reversal) to the normal regimen of footsweeps. I think we're starting to see some nice results.

Basically, in the traditional footsweep drill at the beginning of class, on the last rep is where we utilize this throw. As the sweeper picks up the foot, the other partner makes a small circular action to take his foot out of the sweep, then pick up his partner's foot in a sweep, and then start back across the mat. Once people have the basic concept working, experiment with throwing it in randomly.

It has been a little difficult to not throw as you're doing this. There's great temptation to toss your partner, but you really want to develop a nice, light foot action. Control is the name of the game.

I looked around for a good video or drawing, and as is typical judoinfo.com is the best I was able to locate.

Coincidence - we worked the footsweep drill today, eventually getting around to tsubamegaeshi...

Cool - synchronicity!
