Striking from bottom guard
This is one of those things I saw recently on Spike TV when a replay of TUF was on, Matt Hughes was teaching one of his guys how to throw elbows from the bottom. Though we see it all the time in MMA fights and I'm sure most of you have discussed / explored the idea in great detail, I thought I would post these 'instructional' videos so you can get the thought process behind their training. Just one more thing to be conscious of. <--I notice I'm saying that more and more lately.
For example, spitting needles. Who would have ever thought people trained to do that? 😂 <-- Just one more thing to be conscious of.
This (elbow strikes from bottom) seems to be a technique used more to open cuts than do serious KO type damage. Any one else have thoughts? (Ex. How to defend / avoid)
This is Joe Lauzon (UFC fighter giving his thoughts). http://www.fightauthority.com/mma-fight ... oe-lauzon/
I couldn't get this video to work, maybe you can. http://www.ehow.com/video_4997980_jujit ... iking.html
Tito Ortiz:

That last one with Tito Otriz was just dumb. Why stay there with what he calls the open guard on your back when you can scissor roll him and be on top?
The last thing I'm doing in a street fight is pulling guard. And if by chance I end up there; 1) I'm not staying there and 2) if I can't get up I'm not giving the guy enough space or time to strike. The line between "MMA/tournament" grappling and "survival" grappling has become increasing blurry these days. I believe this what has been dividing the Gracie family for years now, but that's a whole different topic and I don't want to hijack Damon's post.
Exactly! Being on the ground on your back especially should never be your strategy. Getting your butt up if you do wind up there and on your feet is the priority. Too damn dangerous and unpredictable in my opinion.
When we had the folks up from Dallas to work on the MMA stuff, I had an interesting revelation. I like what they did, and like what they showed us and I had a good time. With that said, MMA is a sport. That really resonated with me a few days after that. Of course I realized it before that, but I didn't understand it like I did after that class. The whole 'no gi' thing is great and it doesn't hurt to be aware of it, but again, it is primarily great for sport. If we are on the street, odds are, the guy is going to be wearing a wife beater at minimum to a heavy coat at maximum. That's where I think the MMA guys go wrong. A lot of them don't even bother with gi training anymore, and that is fine...for the sport aspect where the guy isn't going to be wearing a shirt. But I think you miss out on a lot! of real practical 'street' stuff by not working gi training. I mean, if I get in a fight on the street and the guy rips his shirt off and yells 'MMA sucka!"...well sweet! Can I look at your back after we get done rolling around on the pavement? Or better yet black top / asphalt? Anyway, moving on....
Huh. That's strange cause all the street fights I get into are with shirtless guys. Weird...
