Grappling Etiquette
What kinds of things are not polite to do during grappling?

Not Cool:
Knuckles in the ribs
Chin in the ribs/sternum
Neck Cranks
Driving the knee/shin into your partners inner thigh
Grabbing individual toes/fingers to break grips/hooks
Cross facing

These are just a couple I have come up with. What else can you all come up with?

Man, this is like the thread of dirty Judo. Lemme see...

I believe all of these are sort of gray areas with respect to the IJF rules

  • Fists in the back as you're holding down[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]
  • Chokes involving the trachea (not technically illegal by the IJF rules, but don't do that on my mat)[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]
  • Anything that goes for a pain submission rather than a technical submission[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]
  • Using Mr. Elbow in uncool ways[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]
  • Pressure points[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]

Note that the following are against the rules of Judo:

  • stinky gi (Article 4a)[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]
  • crossfacing (Article 27, Item 17)[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]
  • peeling fingers to release grip (Article 27, Item 23)[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]
  • wrist, ankle, knee & neck locks (Article 27, Item 25)[/*:m:3jbkn6rx]

I reserve the chin in the ribs trick for times when I'm up against an a-hole. There's another evil trick that we call "giving them evil head" where you do kesa and grind their temple with the corner of your head.

Crossfacing is a fundamental tactic that I teach students of all levels (unless we're talking about something else) regardless of the ijf rules. Karl's "millstone" escape from katagatame is a terrible, awful, no-good, evil thing that I teach all my students as one fundamental way to upset katagatame.

I don't like it when students do leglocks or leg picks but I don't gripe about it too much unless it's all they try.

I don't allow neck cranks or wind chokes and it makes me mad when people try to play these.
