Topics covered in Judo class.
I'm going to attempt to keep a running list of topics covered in each judo class I attend. Not sure if I'll stick with it, but who knows. Others are welcome to chime in if I forget something, or can post the topics covered during a class I missed.
Tuesday (10/20/09)
Standing:
Kyle did lessons on osoto-gari and hiza-guruma. Multiple "x's" were made with tape on the mat and partners traded throw's concentrating on correct lines.
Ground:
I did lessons on turnovers from the guard.
1) uke stays low and nieve - trap the arm and drive the hips.
2) uke is a little smarter and sits back - scissor sweep.
3) some how a single butterfly hook has been established - same action as "2".
4) uke has managed to get off to one side but you still have your single butterfly - reach down the back, grab the belt, and flip uke kashiwazaki style.
Got some positive feed back from the white belts, others had good technical questions on subtle aspects.
Saturday (10/24/09)
Standing:
Typical saturday morning. Rotated through partners working on different throws. Danny talked about us working on kuzushi with our centers leaving our hands out of it. We were only allowed to use our thumbs and ring fingers for grips.
Ground:
Reviewed the guard sweeps from tuesday evening.
Got to get in a little free play with Chris between classes. Didn't work on any one thing, but just trying to work in some crazy leg 2.0 stuff.
Tuesday 10/27/09
Stretched, ukemi
Footsweeps
Lots of O-goshi on the crash pads, two groups of 5 people
Worked kesa-gatame hold & escape, then added one choke and one armbar for escaping man
Saturday 10/31/09
Worked with Karl on his Sankyu material during the standing portion of class. Helped troubleshoot the gator roll/anaconda choke with Kyle and Chris. Danny showed us ways to negate the choke and turn the tables. I say once the triangle is broken and the choke is negated, cut your loses and transition to something else.
Got to play around with Chris on the ground and work on some "2.0" material.
Worked on kouchi-gari, emphasizing footwork as in
this lesson. Allowed folks to work uchi-mata in as they felt comfortable.
Worked on kouchi-gari from the Zdenek Matl entry, then added control into a grapple with uke escaping. Then added submission work. Then expanded drill to cover any throw.
Saturday Morning (11/7/09)
Went through lines of throwing people with assorted throws. Mostly fundamental throws, plus a couple that are not apart of our normal bag of tricks.
Grappling was the same. Used lines of partners to build up reps of classic and non-classic escapes from kesa, reverse-kesa, and tatashio.
Tuesday (11/10/09)
Class was small but mighty this evening. Congrats to Karl Wenzel on Sankyu.
Worked on Tsuri-komi-goshi and tai-otoshi mainly for the throwing portion of class.
We worked on three variants of a choke from the guard, (video lesson stuff).
Used my buddy Paul before class to run through my basic choking ideas from the closed guard position before class. Got some good feed back, needs a little bit more polishing I think before taping.
Saturday (11/14/09)
Small class. Worked solely with our newest brown belt, Karl. Ran through all my "basic" closed guard material, from both perspectives. Karl is a quick and awesome learner. Should be ready to shoot a couple things come Friday. Also had about 30 minutes of free grappling with Karl, kept things slow, methodical, and beneficial to both parties. I like classes where there is some free time to work on little details that don't necessarily merit a formal lesson, but you just need a partner to provide a little feedback.
Tuesday (11/17/09)
Worked a lot on hip throws. Main emphasis was throwing our partner clean and solid, as well as tori keeping a solid, predictable, stance. This dealt with the issue of tori not throwing a hip throw correctly, a.k.a. rolling uke around the hip instead of rotating them over the hip. It also addressed some people's issue of not wanting to take a big fall because they were not comfortable with their ukemi, thus the crash pads were used to overcome this issue.
Used our new found solid, predictable stances from hip throws to enter into any hold down. Main emphasis was keeping your "elbow" grip from standing all the way down and using it to 1. keep tori and uke tethered together and 2. driving the arm in an advantageous direction for your hold down.
Grappled some with Paul before class got to play a little with ude-gatame from the classic juji-gatame position.
Thursday (11/19/09)
Standing:
Worked a lot on foot sweeps and different variant based upon uke's reaction. Had the usual rotating bell throwing time. Good times.
Ground:
Worked on negating two handed choke from the guard position. So the guy that is being held in the guard has options to buy time and try to get out of it. Danny had some of his usually trickery to had into the mix.
Saturday (11/21/09)
Typical Saturday throwing session. Pretty loose structure, coaching each other as needed.
Ground work was comprised of the material covered in Thursday's lesson.
Wednesday (11/25/09) - Correct, I made it to a morning class.
Got to work some nice foot sweep drills with Christian this morning. We don't usually do these in the evening classes, so they were refreshing. Had few minutes to get a couple throws in before moving to ground work.
Worked on the choke series, juji, and hiji kime from the guard during newaza time.
Morning class seems to fly by since we only have an hour compared to the evening class where class is an hour and half. But it was good times as always. Really starting to contemplate becoming a dojo bum this summer.
Saturday (11/28)
Typical Saturday loose format. Basic warm-ups, foot sweep drills, and trading throws.
Had to split early so missed out on the grappling portion.
Thursday (12/3/09)
Standing consisted on working with hand weaving ideas and getting your partner off balance. That naturally led into sode-tsuri-komi-goshi lesson which was cool.
Ground work consisted of choke variants from kesa-gatame. The back hand comes up and drives into your partners neck and the hand in front comes up and across the jaw line grabbing the wrist of the drive hand. This in invokes one of two things. One the guy taps from a choke, or two the guy taps from an armbar.
Saturday (12/5/09)
No standing work for me today. Got to work with Karl on the ground the entire time. Lot of discussion on passing the guard and working from the bottom. Got in some open grappling as well. Always good. Haven't had much of that these days, so it was nice to just roll around and see what happens.
Saturday (12/12/09)
Spent this saturday concentrating on ne-waza. Danny had a series of chokes that went from side control sliding off to a north south rear naked choke from behind. It's kind of crazy, but simple. A video would only do it justice.
